By Rosalie de Rosset, ed. / Moody Publishers
Underscoring the pivotal role that classic literature plays in the shaping of our lives, Moody Press has introduced Moody Classic Series, celebrating Christian writing which has stood the test of time.
John Bunyan’s Pilgarim’s Progress is one in this series, featured here with fine art cover design; edited by Rosalie DeRosset, 218 pages.
“The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan is a Christian allegory that tells the story of a man named Christian on his journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Throughout his journey, Christian encounters various obstacles and temptations that test his faith and resolve.
One of the most important lessons from “The Pilgrim’s Progress” is the need for repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. In Matthew 4:17, Jesus Himself says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Christian realizes the weight of his sins and the impending judgment he faces, leading him to seek salvation through faith in Christ.
As Christian continues on his journey, he faces numerous trials and tribulations that threaten to derail his faith. In James 1:2-4, it says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Christian learns to rely on God’s strength and guidance through these difficulties, allowing him to grow in his faith and become a stronger believer.
Additionally, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” emphasizes the importance of prayer and fellowship with other believers. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, it says, “pray continually,” and in Hebrews 10:24-25, it says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” Christian’s interactions with other believers on his journey provide him with support, encouragement, and accountability.
Finally, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” underscores the ultimate reward that awaits believers in heaven. In Revelation 21:4, it says, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Christian’s perseverance and faithfulness on his journey lead him to the Celestial City, where he experiences eternal joy and peace.
Overall, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” is a timeless allegory that provides valuable lessons for believers in all stages of their spiritual journey. Through Christian’s experiences, readers can learn the importance of repentance, faith, perseverance, prayer, fellowship, and the ultimate reward of heaven.
